The Story

For more than 50 years, this Ringwood home had one owner. The new owners found it just as it had always been, with the original layout, original finishes and plenty of mid-century charm. The plan felt small, though, with narrow corridors, two separate living areas, two bedrooms and nothing connecting the house to its backyard. The brief was to bring it up to today’s standard of comfort while keeping everything that made it a mid-century home.

From the street, the original timber sash windows and weatherboards stayed, the brickwork was rendered and the palette brightened, and an oversized front door now makes a proper first impression. Inside, the walls and corridors came out to make one open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. A third bedroom was added, the toilet moved in with the bathroom, and the original open fireplace stayed as the heart of the home.

The bathroom became the standout, with a 4-metre raked ceiling, a skylight over the shower and brushed gold fixtures. New double French doors open the living area onto a timber deck under a new pergola, with landscaping that ties the home to its leafy Ringwood surroundings.

Craftsmanship & Build Process

Every selection was chosen to honour the home’s era while lifting it to a new standard. Engineered herringbone flooring, designer cabinetry with a waterfall island benchtop, and custom-made architraves, skirting boards and internal doors sit alongside the original features, so the new work belongs in the house.
